Australia Post is refusing to deliver parcels in Greenhill, saying that some of the driveways are too steep and inaccessible to deliver. I believe this is a silly generalisation and it does not make sense to apply this as a blanket rule to the entire suburb - I have visited Yarrabee Road, Hillside and more, and can see that it is perfectly accessible to deliver to most of these houses. They deserve to get their mail just like anyone else and I will be fighting to support this.
The two main reasons that Australia Post cited for this matter is that there is "difficult terrain involved in accessing and delivering to residences in Greenhill" and there is low population density.
I wrote to Australia Post that I visited constituents in Greenhill and reviewed the terrain and do not accept that the terrain in Greenhill precludes houses from being accessible. The houses along Yarrabee Road, Yanagin Road, Hillside Street, Christopher Avenue and Staplehurst Lane are all in fact on reasonably flat terrain with most doors fairly close to the roadside.
This is the same for some properties on Greenhill Road and Quintin Avenue. Once you are "up the hill" the terrain in Greenhill is no different than most other metropolitan suburbs. Even if we accept that some houses in Greenhill are harder to access, this assessment should be made on a case-by-case basis rather than using blunt instrument to classify the whole suburb as an RSD Zone.
In regard to the low population density, I wrote that the population of Greenhill has in fact grown steadily over recent decades reaching 454 residents in the most recent Census. There are only a handful of residential streets in Greenhill that I observed, and the density of those particular streets is no different to many other suburbs in my electorate that enjoy full Australia Post delivery service.
I have requested that Australia Post reconsider the RSD designation at Greenhill as my constituents in Greenhill deserve a full Australia Post service just like everyone else in the local community. You can read my letter here.
