| The Opposition is calling for an urgent audit of all electronic monitoring devices by the Government after reports that a man cut off his home bail ankle monitor and is now on the run. Shadow Minister for Community Safety, Police and Correctional Services, Jack Batty said the Government must today conduct an audit of the more than 700 alleged criminals currently subject to home detention monitoring. "What is stopping any of these other 700 people with ankle bracelets from simply ripping them off and taking off?" Mr Batty said. "It seems there are some obvious flaws in Labor's electronic monitoring system." "The Government must take action today to ensure that electronic monitoring devices are fit for purpose." "The Minister must also assure us that those currently enjoying prison from home, are not a risk to the community." Mr Batty also said that South Australia's prisons are overflowing which is leading to an increased reliance on home detention. "Labor's approach to its overflowing prisons is to allow serious offenders back out into our community," Mr Batty said. "Under Labor there are no consequences for breaching bail, that's why breach of bail offences has skyrocketed by up to 60 per cent by young offenders, and 20 per cent by adult offenders." "Dangerous criminals belong behind bars not in broken bracelets." "I am sick of an endless cycle of bail breaches with no consequences; it is time community safety came first. If you keep breaking your bail, you belong in jail."
