Crime and Community Safety Survey
Published November 2024
It is a great honour to have been appointed to Shadow Cabinet as the Shadow Minister for Community Safety, Police and Correctional Services.
With crime rising both in our local area and beyond, my number one priority in this new role will be keeping South Australians safe with an initial focus on:
- Policing – crime will keep rising unless we better recruit, retain and resource SAPOL. Our police are seriously under-resourced with a shortfall of nearly 200 cops on the beat. I am concerned we are now seeing the impact of this on frontline policing and community safety.
- Penalties – repeat offenders are a big part of our growing crime problem. We need to review penalties to make sure there are consequences for those who break the law. We also need to review bail conditions, which should not be made to be broken.
- Prevention – we should invest in best practice crime prevention. Whether this be early intervention, supporting those coming out of corrections facilities and practical measures in our community to break the cycle of crime.
As always, your views on these matters will continue to inform my advocacy and decision-making. I would be very appreciative if you could take the time to complete my new Crime and Community Safety Survey so that I can better represent you and your views in Parliament.
