Fighting to get trucks off Portrush Road from Day 1

Published October 2022

One of my biggest local priorities is getting trucks off our local roads – including Portrush Road and Glen Osmond Road.

I drive down Portrush Road every day. It is lined with residential houses, shops and schools which should not be mixing with B-Doubles.

Our local roads are simply not appropriate freight routes.

Soon after being elected, I wrote to Minister Tom Koutsantonis to call on him to expedite the Greater Adelaide Freight Bypass Study. This Study is investigating the construction of upgraded freight routes to enable trucks to be diverted from the South Eastern Freeway to bypass Adelaide. I strongly support a freight bypass.

I have also pursued the issue in the media and in the Parliament including through my maiden speech and my first ever question in Question Time.

We have recently seen yet another terrifying reminder of why I am advocating so strongly on this issue. I was so relieved that everyone survived the horrific crash at the bottom of the South Eastern Freeway in July 2022 but it should not take another tragedy to see action on this issue.

The most recent incident – involving a truck, a bus and seven cars – was the fifth major crash at the notorious intersection since 2010 including four fatalities.

I will keep up the fight on this issue – we cannot afford not to. I will soon be launching a major petition calling on the Government to implement the freight bypass.

Please let me know your thoughts or if you are interested in signing this petition or if would like to discuss road safety issues with me.
