New Acting Shadow Environment Minister

Published June 2024

The Opposition will have a new Acting Shadow Environment Minister with Member for Bragg, Jack Batty, elevated to the position.

Leader of the Opposition, David Speirs, is currently Acting Shadow Minister for Health in the absence of Ashton Hurn who is on maternity leave.

Mr Batty – who was previously Shadow Assistant Minister for Environment and Heritage – will take on Mr Speirs’ previous portfolio while the Leader focusses on health and record ramping under Peter Malinauskas and Labor.

Leader of the Opposition David Speirs welcomed Mr Batty’s appointment in the lead up to Budget Estimates later this week.

“Jack has a strong passion for the environment and he has been excellent in his time as my Shadow Assistant Minister,” Mr Speirs said.

“With Ashton Hurn on maternity leave there has been an opportunity to elevate Jack to the Shadow Ministry and I congratulate him on his appointment.

“I will remain as Acting Shadow Health Minister and continue to hold the Malinauskas Labor Government to account for their failure to deliver on their number one election commitment to ‘fix ramping’.

“I thank the Labor Government for agreeing to my request for this role. They clearly share my desire to see a modern Parliament and I look forward to working with them to achieve further reforms to modernise the way our seat of democracy functions in line with our community’s expectations.”
