Pedestrian deaths surge 166% as Liberals back red light camera for Marryatville High School

Published May 2023

The Opposition is calling on the Malinauskas Labor Government to install a red light camera at the Marryatville High School crossing - addressing the concerns of the local community - following a crash where two teenagers were seriously injured in March.

The installation of the red light camera has the support of the local community who have revealed, shockingly, that drivers ran a red light at the crossing on two other occasions in the days after the serious crash on March 22 and 23.

Meanwhile, new SAPOL data has revealed pedestrian deaths have skyrocketed by 166 per cent when compared to last year - three in 2022 while eight fatalities have been recorded so far this year.

Shadow Minister for Road Safety, Vincent Tazia, said 28 pedestrians have been seriously injured in collisions this year.

“Pedestrians, including school children, are being seriously injured and killed on our roads at an alarming rate and Peter Malinauskas needs to act so we can stop this tragic and unnecessary loss of life,” Mr Tarzia said.

“Looking at the numbers, this is terrifying data and more must be done to help boost road safety for pedestrians because they are some of our most vulnerable road users.”

Member for Bragg, Jack Batty, said he has raised the concerns of parents and requests for a red light camera to be installed at the crossing with Tom Koutsantonis, but is yet to receive a response.

“I’ve spoken with parents and staff involved with the school and there is a clear need for this red light camera to deter dangerous driving behaviour - especially when we’ve learned there were two near misses just after the March 21 crash,” Mr Batty said.

“The pedestrian crossing outside Marryatville High meets all of the criteria outlined for the installation of a red light camera, including those that would warrant it to be determined a high priority location.

“Peter Malinauskas and Tom Koutsantonis need to come to the table and ensure a red light camera is installed at Marryatville High School because we cannot put a price on the safety of school children.

“We are also calling for a widespread review of all school crossings in SA to ensure each one is up to safety standards. This is a non-negotiable and could be the difference between seeing another pedestrian death or saving a person’s life.”
