Glenunga Rams Football Club - Acknowledgement

Published September 2023

With the 2023 football seasoning drawing to a close, I wanted to take the opportunity to shine a light on a fantastic local football club in my electorate. The Glenunga Football Club is one of the largest community sporting clubs in the state, with more than 850 players across the junior and senior football programs.

In recent years, a source of great pride for the Club has been the growth of its girls footy program. Starting with 80 girls in 2017, the Club now boasts over 250 registered girls, forming an impressive 11 girls junior teams in 2023, making the Rams the largest football club for girls football in South Australia. The Club attributes this growth to the supportive environment they have fostered to ensure the junior girls can learn, succeed and enjoy the game.

Last Sunday the Club held their Junior Football Presentation Day to celebrate a very successful season. For those junior premiership eligible teams it was an amazing effort with 7 out of 7 girls teams making the finals (with 6 playing in a Grand Final), and, 5 of 7 boys teams also made the finals with 2 making it to the Grand Final. A big congratulations to the U13 Girls Division 1 team and to the U14 Boys Division 1 team who both won their Grand Finals in nail-biting matches.

On Saturday, 9th September I watched the mens finals double-header at Webb Oval. The B Grade defeated Sacred Heart Old Collegians in an elimination final, which was followed by a fantastic win for the Minor Premier A grade team against Prince Alfred Old Collegians. The A grade now go straight through to the Division 1 Grand Final which will be played on Saturday 23 September at Coopers Stadium.

Another notable achievement for the Club this season was Grade A player Abe Davis winning the Adelaide Football Leagues Division 1 Keith Sims Medal, the first Division 1 medallist in the club’s history. Congratulations Abe!

Like all amateur sporting clubs the success of the Rams Footy Club is achieved by more than just the players. Each week hundreds of parents and volunteers get involved behind the scenes filling important roles at the Club such as coach, team manager, ground Marshall, first aid, boundary umpire, even cooking the all-important BBQ on match days. I would like to acknowledge and thank everyone who gets involved and donates their time as the players can’t take to the oval without these roles being filled.

In closing I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the Rams executive Committee, some of whom are retiring this year after many years of involvement. Their leadership and passion for the Club has been a significant factor in the Rams ongoing success.

Con Tragakis - Chair
Ben Stapleton – President (retiring this year)
Tom Edwards - Secretary
Don Munro - Treasurer
Chris Aston - Senior Football Director
Graham Jaeschke - Junior Football Director (retiring this year).

I wish the A and B grade teams every success for their remaining matches.

- GO RAMS!
